It’s home! #3 – Red shelves as the dominant feature in a creative studio

For the third part of our series in which we take a peek at Fleysen products in their new homes, we visited the studio of illustrator Anežka Hájková and graphic designer Jakub Spurný. The couple initially purchased two #1210 standing shelves, but they were so happy with them that after a short time they decided to get even more. In the end, Fleysen shelves now cover one entire wall of their studio.

“At first we bought two shelves, but we liked them so much that we ended up getting two more.”

The young creative couple initially liked the light green shelf, but their artistic discernment eventually led them to a bright red after a complicated selection process. The red complements the Robot lamp in the space, designed by Anežka's distant great-uncle Josef Hůrka for Lidokov.

How did you discover Fleysen and why did you choose it?

Jakub: We were looking for shelving for the office, and Fleysen had caught my eye some time ago on the Nanovo website, which I trust. I really like the lacquered wire in combination with the larger surfaces. I like it when large surfaces are intersected by thin lines. I haven’t found anything like this from other Czech manufacturers. The deciding factor was definitely the combination of price, appearance, and load capacity.

Anežka: When Jakub showed them to me, I just said, “Yeah, those are the ones”, and that was that. At first we bought two shelves, but we liked them so much that we ended up getting two more.

Did the fact that the product is FSC certified and easily recyclable play a role in your choice? Or that it is made in the Czech Republic?

Anežka: As far as sustainability is concerned, we mainly think about whether the furniture will last a long time and whether we will like it for a long time. It’s also important to us that it’s a local product.

Jakub: We didn’t really consider the recycling aspect, but we wanted metal furniture that is produced by a Czech company that we can call if we have an issue. The most important thing for us is that this kind of all-metal design simply makes sense, and it won’t just fall apart.

How did the assembly go?

We were surprised that before the shelves are bolted to the wall, they’re a bit like a living creature. But considering how lightweight the frame is, it makes sense. Attaching them to the wall was a bit of a challenge due to our crooked floor, but otherwise it was faster than putting together IKEA furniture.
